Amidst the thousands of heroic figures and villainous tyrants in Magic: The Gathering not a single one has had a stranglehold on fan’s attention quite like the wandering homunculus Fblthp. This little magical assistant had humble beginnings from being the subject of an unfortunate instant spell to eventually becoming front and center on two different legendary creature cards.

During his wanderings, Fblthp often finds himself hopelessly lost among the spires of Ravnica, and occasionally winding up on other planes while they’re at it. But just how many cards has Fblthp ended up on while trying to find his way home?

Fblthp Can Be Found In 18 Cards

Totally Lost by David Palumbo

Keen-eyed players will be able to spot Fblthp in eighteen cards at the time of this writing, sometimes hiding in the background of the art, while other times he is front and center as the main character for once. The name Fblthp (pronounced ‘Fibblethip’), first appeared around 2003 as a pseudonym during a Q&A session back in 2003, before even the original Ravnica block. Since then, Fblthp has grown to be his own character, though you may have to squint to find him.

His first appearance was all the way back in 2013’s Gatecrash set, the second set of the Return to Ravnica block on the card Totally Lost. The art for Totally Lost features poor Fblthp lost and seemingly very scared among the busy streets of Ravnica. Even the flavor text of the card lets you know how much little Fblthp hates crowds, firmly establishing them as the perfect target for future cards.

Fblthp found himself on two other cards the next year, popping up in the Conspiracy card Unquestioned Authority, peeking out from behind the feet of other people on a flight of stairs, and then the Magic 2015 card Statute of Denial, hiding in a little gutter as wizards duel in the streets. It would be several years before Magic would return to Ravnica, giving our little friend some much-deserved peace and quiet, until Nicol Bolas set in motion his plans for the War of the Spark.

The little homunculus would be featured on several cards in the sets before Nicol Bolas besieged all of Ravnica, the first being March of the Multitudes, showing off the many Soldiers that stand with the Selesnya guild, as well as one little homunculus peeking out from between the Soldiers legs.

Fblthp would later want to spend some free time hanging out with the Rakdos guild as one of the awestruck members of Captive Audience, hanging out on the shoulder of a knight, clearly aghast at whatever depraved antics the Rakdos performers are getting into on stage.

Finally, after years of hiding in the shadows and waiting for his chance to shine, Fblthp gets his very own card, Fblthp, the Lost during the War of the Spark. Finding himself in the midst of a battle between planeswalkers and the Zombie Eternals, Fblthp pulled through relatively untouched by the cataclysmic battle. Fblthp goes back to his Totally Lost roots, shuffling itself back into your library when it becomes the target of a spell. The trade-off for this weird ability is that when Fblthp enters the battlefield you get to draw a card, and if you were able to cast it from your library, a difficult feat, you can draw two cards.

Since then, Fblthp has had an entire Secret Lair devoted to him, five cards filled with tons of references and little easter eggs, along with our boy hidden somewhere in each one. The five-card panorama by Marija Tiurina included some powerful cards like Intruder Alarm and Path to Exile, as well as getting an alternate art version of his Fblthp, the Lost.

It wouldn’t be long until Fblthp made a return, this time in the cosmic set Unfinity. Either through some magical mishap or perhaps wanting to enjoy a little fun for one, Fblthp made his way to Myra the Magnificent's Intergalactic Astrotorium of Fun, a carnival deep in the emptiness of space. There, Fblthp became Super-Duper Lost, a powered-up version of Totally Lost that tucks a creature deeper into your opponent’s library, equal to the number of doors you can see from your seat. Unfinity even gave us the chance to use a Fblthp sticker, letting us add Fblthp to any card we want in Magic!

Ever adrift in the many realms of Magic, the almost magically disoriented homunculus has even found himself on a test card, The Grand Tour. These cards aren’t legal cards and can only be found in specialty products like Mystery Boosters or more recently at MagicCons. Test cards will often show the potential of the game rules or mechanics before rigorous amounts of testing and reworking have refined them.

The Grand Tour is a card similar to Totally Lost but sends the target all over the place before returning them to play. The Grand Tour exiles a permanent, then puts it back in its owner’s hand. Then, they have to discard that card, only to put it from the graveyard back to the top of the library. And finally, they take that card from the top of their library and put it back on the battlefield, sending it across four zones before returning it to where it started.

Fblthp’s Triumphant Return

MTG: Borborygmos and Fblthp card

Sick of being the world’s punching bag and wanting to finally make a difference in a battle, when New Phyrexia broke through the planes to invade Ravnica, Fblthp did what any good Ravnican would do, turn around and run far, far away. Unfortunately, he found himself on the front lines of the war, running directly into legions of Phyrexianized Golgari. Thankfully, there at the battle was Borborygmos, holding back the waves of invaders.

The two teamed up for the battle, with Fblthp squeaking in Borborygmos’ ear when anything dangerous gets too close, warning the monstrous Cyclops of all threats, and in return, Borborygmos knows to move on to smashing something new.
