The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the biggest games of all time, having sold more than 50 million copies, with it contributing to the bulk of the 75 million copies that The Witcher series has sold overall. Meanwhile, Cyberpunk 2077 retains a large and dedicated fanbase despite its earlier difficulties. Now, game industy veterans with decades of experience between them have formed a new studio known as Blank., which comprise former members of the developer behind those games.

Last year, Mateusz Kanik announced that he was leaving CD Projekt Red after 15 years at the company. "Something ends, something begins," Kanik tweeted at the time. Now we know this new thing is Blank. Having served as lead game designer on The Witcher 2 and as game director on Cyberpunk 2077, Kanik brings with him plenty of dev experience, while other members of the new studio also have a great deal of RPG development knowhow. This will come in handy as Blank. is working on a "character-driven game set in an apocalyptic world".

“We’re thrilled to announce Blank. and to start expanding our incredible team,” said Mateusz Kanik, the studio's co-founder and game director. “After working for years in an increasingly conservative industry, we’re ready to make bold, impactful projects that share our unique creativity and values." Kanik also offered clues as to what we might expect from Blank. in terms of game experiences, with the cover image above also an indication of what the new studio might be cooking up.

"Where the industry champions a dictatorship of the creative individual, we want to give ownership to the team," Kanik said, via a press statement. "Where the industry leans on crunch culture, we prefer work-life balance. Where the industry says bigger is better, we’re setting our sights on highly polished games with a focus on emotion, story, and craftsmanship."

Joining him are Jedrzej Mroz (CDPR) and Marcin Jefimow (CDPR, 11 Bit Studios) as executive producers, and Mikolaj Marchewka (Rookiez from Warsaw S.A.) as managing director. Co-founder Jefimow suggests that the studio has a new project that'll be shown in the not too distant future.

“Our game development philosophy comes from our own stories and experiences," Jefimow said. "With Blank. we want to build a space where we can honor our histories, but also be playful and open to brand new inspirations as we collaborate creatively. We’ve already got a head start on a budding new project that we can’t wait to share with players and craft with new team members.”

Currently, Blank has ten team members but are looking to expand to almost 60 people to support development of their as yet unnanounced project. Blank. is based in Warsaw, Poland, and those interested in applying can check their official website for available job openings.
