An Apex Legends player in an all-women tournament was accused of transphobia leading to the disqualification of a team with trans players. That disqualification was later rescinded and the team remains in contention for a $100,000 grand prize. The team accused of transphobia, however, was later disqualified after the incident was investigated.

Twitch Affiliate Sani of Team Vexxx detailed the situation in a lengthy Twitter thread on May 18. According to her, "A known transphobic member of the Apex community reached out to the admins to spread rumors and false statements about my teammate's identity, post-verification." The admins of the Her Galaxy tournament then disqualified the player later than evening.

According to an investigation by Kotaku, the Her Galaxy tournament is open to trans women and only required a piece of government-issued ID and preferred pronouns to enter. The Team Vexxx member, who goes by Gabe and she/they pronouns, confirmed to Her Galaxy's administration that while her government ID didn't match her stated pronouns, she was assured that wouldn't be a problem for entering the tournament.

"They understood my circumstances, they knew I couldn’t go change my government identity because of me potentially getting kicked out of my house," explained Gabe to Kotaku.

Following news of Team Vexxx's disqualification, the Her Galaxy community erupted in accusations of transphobia. One Apex player named Ira noted that a particular player named wondernikki made transphobic comments live on stream and repeatedly misgendered Gabe.

"It’s literally not a problem, unless we have to fight a three-man guy team, then that’s out of my power," a voice thought to be wondernikki said while another person laughed. "He doesn’t even belong in our tournament. End of story. I don’t care what the fuck that person says."

Following the backlash, Her Galaxy reinstated Team Vexxx on May 19 and issued the following statement on Discord:

"Following today’s events, we have made the decision to reinstate the team in question to the Her Galaxy $100K Apex Legends Open. The Her Galaxy $100K Apex Legends Open was created to provide an inclusive, welcoming space for women and trans women. This is a teachable moment for us, and we will continue to improve our processes so this does not happen again. We apologize for any hurt or confusion this caused.

"Independently, as part of this investigation, we have unearthed discourse that violates our code of conduct. We have a zero-tolerance policy for discriminatory behavior and have disqualified this team from the Her Galaxy $100K Apex Legends Open. Education and rehabilitation are a priority for Her Galaxy, and we hope this team can join us in building a more inclusive and supportive space."

Team Vexxx is now listed in ninth place with 32 points in the Her Galaxy upper bracket. The top ten teams automatically qualify for the final round set to begin June 25.
