The Call of Duty series isn’t exactly known for its vibrant colors, and Modern Warfare 2 is no different. However, it can be a nice break from the bright, oversaturated colors that seem to flood every screen these days, and it's fun to customize weapons, banners, and calling cards to put a personal flair on the game.
One of the best ways for players to add their own style to their operator’s ensemble is to equip a gun camo, which are unlocked by completing various challenges in game. Keep in mind that this list is going off of pure aesthetic. Sometimes it’s just about looking good.
10 Petri Digital
Petri Digital is one of those camos that stands out because of its stellar color scheme. The bright blue, pink, and greenish-yellow add an extra bit of whimsy to any loadout, no matter how serious-looking it may be. It also has this cool digital camo look going on, hence the name, which adds a futuristic vibe as well.
It’s unclear who is naming these camos after kind of gross science things, but regardless of what its title may evoke, the Petri Digital camo is still a winner.
9 Oxysporum
If there’s one thing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t have enough of it's pastel colors. A cursory search reveals that Oxysporum is actually a type of fungus that can be a pathogen to plants - what it has to do with Call of Duty is anybody’s guess, maybe it was in the petri dish?
As for the camo itself, the use of a light, salmon pink and a mint green mixed together isn’t something players might expect to see in this kind of game, but it adds a much-needed softness to the usual lineup of blacks, reds, and forest greens.
8 8-Bit Static
All the “Fun” camos in the game live up to their name, but the 8-Bit Static camo has to be the most striking of all of them. It has this cool multicolored grid pattern that is somewhat reminiscent of the TV test pattern, also known as the “colorful bars.”
The camo also has sections on the gun that consist of a dark greyish color, which is nice because it keeps the colorful bits from overwhelming the entire look. The 8-Bit Static camo is one of the more eye-catching yet understated skins out there, which is why it had to get some much-needed recognition.
7 Cthulhu
There’s nothing more intimidating than a skull, but putting pink skulls on a gun is another level of hardcore. All the “Skulls” camos are cool for obvious reasons, but Cthulhu’s pink-on-black contrast makes the skulls visible on the gun at a glance, while the other color variations can get lost in translation in the heat of battle.
When it comes to showing off those sick skulls to assert dominance over other players, the Cthulhu camo is the way to go. Lovecraft would be proud.
6 Uncheckered
When it comes to a basic black and white camo, it doesn’t get much cooler than Uncheckered. The irregular, jagged checkerboard pattern makes for one of the most striking gun camos in the game, and while it might make your gun stick out a bit more than usual, it’s definitely worth it.
Uncheckered feels like a callback to the mod style of the 1960s, and there’s always the chance that your enemy will become entirely confused at the sight of it. Overall, it’s a strong choice.
5 Spectrums
Spectrums is part of the “Classic” collection of camos. It was introduced to the series as a DLC gun camo for Call of Duty: Ghosts as an Xbox exclusive. Thankfully Infinity Ward decided to bring it back for Modern Warfare 2, because who doesn’t love a rainbow tiger pattern on their assault rifle? No one, that’s who.
Spectrums is somewhat reminiscent of Lisa Frank’s signature style, and with the nineties styles being all the rage these days, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this camo making a resurgence.
4 Fractal Mud
Of all of the color combinations on the camos in Modern Warfare 2, this one has to be one of the most aesthetically pleasing. The muted earth tones give off something of a mid-century modern vibe, adding a sophisticated flair to a gun of the player’s choosing.
Then there’s the pattern itself, with the pale yellow outlines around the camo-like splotches of orange and green. Fractal Mud is a camo that might have flown under a lot of players’ radars, but here’s hoping it can get the recognition it deserves.
3 Viscous
Despite having one of the more gross names in Modern Warfare 2’s camo lineup, it’s undeniable that Viscous looks pretty sick. It’s a camo that can only be acquired during an event (in this case, players have to find the mystery case in Raid Episode 2) so it’ll require a little extra work to obtain.
It’ll be worth it though, because that neon green and black combo just can’t be beat. Add on those patches that look like scales, and that toxic-sludge-looking camo makes for one slick look, despite the name.
2 Gold
It’s the flashiest camo in the game, but it’s also one of the most iconic when it comes to demonstrating prowess out on the battlefield. The Gold camo is only unlocked when you have unlocked every other base camo, so it’s a testament to skill… and how much you play the game.
Some might call it tacky, but when it comes to status symbols in an online competitive game, it’s hard to beat a gold-plated gun. It might draw some attention if the light catches it in just the right way, but at least the opponent will get a glimpse of how cool it looks before securing the kill.
1 Galvanic
Galvanic is a must-have because it’s one of the animated gun camos, which makes it one of the absolute coolest options by default. It can only be earned by completing Raid Episode 3 on the Veteran difficulty, so this camo is basically a trophy to show off while also looking wicked.
Galvanic has a purplish-blue galaxy aesthetic going on, complete with white lines that kind of look like clouds. It’s a bit unclear exactly what the pattern is supposed to look like, but the overall effect is pretty stunning.
