Mortal Kombat fans think that the reveal trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 contains several hints that suggest that Mileena is the queen of Edenia in Liu Kang’s universe.

After years of waiting to hear what NetherRealm Studios was working on, last week it finally confirmed that its next game is Mortal Kombat 1, which takes place in a universe that’s been built by Fire God Liu Kang. The trailer was brief and mostly served to set the tone, but it showed enough that fans have already started crafting theories about the reimagined cast.

One of the most exciting parts of the trailer was no doubt when Mileena was almost instantly confirmed to be in the game, after having been heavily requested by fans to appear in Mortal Kombat 11’s Kombat Pack after missing out on the main game. We only got to see a little of Mileena and Kitana (enough to know she’s thankfully lipless again), but the small glimpse we got might have had some clues on where their characters are going.

In fact, one Mortal Kombat fan has put together a pretty convincing theory that suggests that Mileena is the queen of Edenia (or possibly even Outworld) in Liu Kang’s universe. The theory was put together by Twitter user Rooflemonger, who spotted a few key details that suggest things have changed for the sisters this time around.

The first interesting detail is that Mileena is sitting in the back of the carriage, which is usually where the most important figure in the cart sits. It’s also noteworthy that Mileena appears to be sitting on something that makes her stand above Kitana, which Rooflemonger suggests is a throne of some kind. The carriage that the two are in is also coloured purple, Mileena’s trademark colour, as is the parade welcoming them in, which suggests that the crowd are welcoming Mileena in and not Kitana.

As for Kitana, her behaviour in the trailer lends credence to the theory too, as she’s seen peeking out of the curtains and watching the crowd closely, which Rooflemonger suggests is because she’s on guard duty of some kind. All of those points combine to make a strong case that Mileena is the queen of Edenia or Outworld this time around, not Kitana. It’d certainly be an interesting change for the pair’s dynamic, although why she’s been made queen is something that’s not quite clear yet.

It’s possible that Liu Kang chose to make Mileena the queen to make sure that Kitana is safe and unburdened by royal duties. That, or NetherRealm is just incredibly self-aware and knows how much most Mortal Kombat fans like Mileena. To know for sure, we’re going to have to wait and find out the fates of Sindel and Shao Kahn, as they surely play a key role in the lore here.
