Only it's not very clear that you should leave, nor is the area's scope immediately apparent, so lots of people stay here for too long, wander aimlessly, pick up quests too hard, and end up hating The Hinterlands, if not the whole game itself. Similarly, Jedi: Survivor plonks you down on Koboh early on, which is also too vast to comprehend in a single sitting, although it has a different approach to help avoid the very same pitfall. But in avoiding The Hinterlands Problem, it creates an entirely new one.

I wasn't all that excited when Star Wars Jedi: Survivor revealed it would be adding a Blaster stance to the game. Combat in the first game was fairly rewarding, and I wanted to see that evolve, not change. Adding a gun into the mix not only seemed to be very un-Jedi behaviour (we associate blasters more with Lando, Han, or Poe than we do Luke, Yoda, or Rey), it also meant extra work for the devs. New approaches with a melee weapon is one thing, but adding a new ranged attack into the mix as well, and having it feel worthwhile, was a very big ask. Not only did the gun need to fit in, but each new skirmish needed to be designed to accommodate either approach. After playing it, I found Blaster was my favourite stance. Now I want a game that fully utilises it.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is most commonly called a Soulslike, because of the parry-based combat system and the fact save points exist at meditation zones (stand-ins for bonfires) which fully heal you, but at the cost of respawning enemies. There are also significant boss battles scattered across the campaign and the open world, some of which have one-hit kill attacks. I get it, but at the same time, I've never been sure the description fits. Difficulty, fans have always argued, is a core part of the Dark Souls experience, while Jedi: Survivor has five difficulty options, including one that makes the game practically pedestrian. Added to that, the bosses feel like an inconsequential roadblock, rather than the core purpose of the story as they are in Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and especially Elden Ring. I'd argue the game is closer to a Metroidvania, and that's an avoidable mistake.

Those three projects have something in common, and it's not the word 'one'. I mean, they do have that in common, but that's not what I'm talking about. The second, and far more important thing these stories have in common, is that they are small. These are individual, personal, largely insignificant stories in the overall Star Wars mythology. They don't involve universe shaping events, they don't impact many other other tales from the Star Wars universe, and they don't even have recognisable characters. In not mattering, they manage to matter more than everything else.
