The Master Sword is one of the most iconic weapons in gaming, and for good reason - it has been Link's primary weapon of choice for decades at this point. Even in a game like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which emphasizes how temporary weapons are, the Master Sword remains a constant companion.

That said, you'll have to acquire the Master Sword before it can resume its role as your main weapon. When you begin the game, you'll only have a ruined version, but a complete version exists out there. Here's how to get it.

This guide contains major story spoilers for Tears of the Kingdom. Beware!

How To Get The Master Sword

Tears of the Kingdom - Master Sword Location Map

There are two ways to learn where the Master Sword is:

  • Collect all the Dragon Tears from the Geoglyphs around Hyrule, and then collect the final one that appears in the northeast. This will make it stunningly obvious where the sword is.
  • Head to Korok Forest and cleanse it of the gloom. After this, speak to the Great Deku Tree.

It is recommended that you at least complete the second point on this list, as this will begin the quest Recovering the Hero's Sword. This gives you a handy quest marker that points directly at the Master Sword's location, no matter where it is in the world.

Before you actually try to find the Master Sword, be aware that you will need to increase your Stamina significantly before attempting to get it. Just like in Breath of the Wild, you'll need a certain amount before you can wield it - in this game, you'll need five extra segments of Stamina. This will look like a complete extra ring around the first ring.

Tears of the Kingdom - Gliding to the Light Dragon

From the two clues above, you'll learn that the Master Sword is buried in the head of the Light Dragon, who flies around Hyrule in a set pattern. It winds around the outside of Hyrule in a loop.

If you don't have the quest marker provided by Recovering the Hero's Sword, a good tip is to activate all the outer Skyview Towers and then fast-travel to them in a circuit until you see the dragon in the sky.

To get on top of the Light Dragon, wait until it's near a Skyview Tower and launch yourself into the sky. It should be easy to glide down to the dragon, especially with how much Stamina you'll have. Having Tulin's Gust ability will help greatly with distance if you need it.

Tears of the Kingdom - Holding onto the Master Sword

Once on the Light Dragon's back, walk all the way to its head, and you'll find the Master Sword. Interact with it, and you'll enter a cutscene. Hold down the A button, and you'll slowly drain Stamina. If you have enough, you'll be rewarded with the Master Sword. If you do not have enough, you'll have to go get more Stamina and try again.

If you need more Stamina in a pinch, consider using the Cursed Statue beneath Lookout Landing to temporarily swap Heart Containers for Stamina.

The Master Sword acts as it does in the first game. It can break, but will automatically add itself to your weapon inventory again after a period of time. In addition, trying to throw the sword will unleash a damaging blade of light - but only at full health.
