Unlike in its predecessor, the bosses that you have to fight in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have some variety to them. Instead of fighting different elemental aspects of the big bad himself, you're fighting monstrous goons who create environmental disasters for the civilians of Hyrule who simply want to get on with their lives.

The Mucktorok is one such boss and is responsible for the sludge that plagues Zora Domain. After traversing a tricky gauntlet of sky islands and dealing with low gravity as you solve puzzles in the Water Temple, this boss is a rather great way to take your frustrations out.

Mucktorok Overview

Tears of the Kingdom - Mucktorok Regular Form

Mucktorok is an interesting boss - it's a small alien-like Octorok with sludge-creation abilities. For the majority of the battle, it will assume the form of a sludge shark, which it uses to zoom around the battlefield and attack you.

When struck with a water attack, the Mucktorok will either be stunned for a bit or shed its shark form, allowing you to close in and strike it a few times. This is the only time you can damage it - when in sludge shark form, you cannot damage the boss.

Tears of the Kingdom - Mucktorok circle attack

The Mucktorok has two basic attacks. The first is a leaping dive, which summons concentric rings of sludge from the impact point. The second is a laser beam of sludge that it will fire in a sweeping motion from left to right. Both of these attacks can be easily leapt over, especially with the Water Temple's lower gravity.

How To Beat Mucktorok

Tears of the Kingdom - Attacking the Mucktorok in its regular form

While any watery attacks will contribute to Mucktorok shedding its sludge shark form and becoming vulnerable for a short while, you'll want to use the attack attached to Sidon's water shield power. This will knock the sludge form off in one hit. Using arrows fused with Splash Fruit or Chuchu Jelly will take two hits.

The absolute best time to try hitting the boss with a water wave from Sidon's power is as it's using its sludge beam attack.

Once the sludge shark form is knocked off, rush to the boss and deal as much damage as you can with your strongest melee weapons. It cannot retaliate in this form at all, so don't worry about taking hits.

After a short while, it will reassume the sludge shark form, and the cycle begins all over again.

Tears of the Kingdom - Mucktorok second phase transition

When the boss reaches half health, a cutscene will play, and the fight enters a second phase. In this phase, the boss will create large patches of sludge all over the battlefield. These can be very annoying, so clean them up with water waves when you have the chance.

In the second phase of the battle, Mucktorok will start diving through its puddles of sludge after being knocked out of shark form and will do so either until it regains enough energy to reassume the shark form, or until it gets struck and stunned for a longer period of time.

Tears of the Kingdom - Aiming an arrow at the Mucktorok

The easiest way to knock the Mucktorok out of the air as it is diving around in its default form is to jump into the air and shoot an arrow at it from mid-air. The midair slowdown gives you plenty of time to knock it out of the air and then rush to it for a beatdown.

All in all, this fight is more annoying than difficult. Save your watery items for cleaning up sludge in the second phase and use Sidon's ability to knock the shark form off it.
