The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom offers dozens of unique approaches to combat, including sharp swords and humongous hammers. However, despite the numerous heavy-hitting creations that you can create via fusions, your most valuable asset might be a little magic.

Magic Rods and Sceptors feature unique fusion interactions when paired with certain rare gemstones. These five major fusions each provide a distinctive benefit that will bolster your abilities both in and out of combat.

While each combination is useful, some simply outshine others due to their exceptional secondary effects. These are the best Magic Rod and gemstone combinations in Tears of the Kingdom.

5 Opal Rod

The Opal Rod is visually stunning and spouts a water-based projectile from its gem when used. Unfortunately, these water projectiles don't really offer much in combat, as they don't provide huge amounts of damage unless the enemy is weak to water.

In addition, Sidon's sage ability already offers a water projectile in addition to the flexibility of complete defense from damage when using that power. The redundant nature of this combination makes it the least interesting rod, but certainly not useless.

You'll find this weapon extremely useful during your adventures to help Sidon, even if his ability is similar. The Opal Rod should help fill in the gaps when Sidon's power is on cooldown.

4 Star-Fragment Rod

The Star-Fragment Rod is easily the rarest of the five special combinations as Star Fragments are extremely rare materials not often found in Hyrule. If you are able to get your hands on these rare fragments, you may want to set one aside to use on a Magic Rod.

Despite not offering much in the way of combat, the Star-Fragment Rod creates renewable light around you. This power is extremely valuable when wandering The Depths, as the dark areas are difficult to completely illuminate without dozens of Brightbloom Seeds. While the ricocheting light energies will prove incredibly valuable, they won't offer much help in combat.

3 Ruby Rod

The Ruby Rod is an incredibly useful tool and a powerful weapon in combat. Much like the prior combinations, it shoots three projectiles when not charged and unleashes a ring of fireballs when fully charged. These fireballs also provide light, but far less consistently than the Star-Fragment Rod.

This combination is best used to start fires, whether it be a campfire to eat or setting an entire enemy camp ablaze, the uses are numerous. You'll burn foes and cause them to take damage over time if you light the surrounding ground on fire. Whatever your fancy, the Ruby Rod should provide everything you need to start an adventure.

2 Topaz Rod

The Topaz Rod offers many of the same combat benefits as the Ruby Rod but boasts an even more powerful secondary effect: stunning. When hit by one of the electrified projectiles, foes will be electrocuted and stunned in place for a few seconds. During this time they can be finished off quite easily.

The damage from the electrical current is significant, and the Topaz Rod also can light up a room when needed, providing some excellent practical use outside of combat. When used on the water, electricity will damage soaked enemies, providing further creative uses if you're a crafty tactician.

1 Sapphire Rod

The Sapphire Rod is easily one of the best weapons in Tears of the Kingdom due to its freezing capabilities and its powerful practical uses. Charging up the Sapphire Rod will unleash a cold blast in all directions, freezing anything in its path.

The freezing projectiles will solidify water around you, creating platforms that you can cross on top of the water. In addition, enemies caught in the blast will be as frozen as the icy platforms this incredible rod can create.

Each rod boasts its own unique capabilities, but the Sapphire Rod pulls ahead to claim the best magical rod crown due to the powerful combat and platforming power that freezing provides.
