There is so much extra writing going into this game, whether it be world building, descriptions of quests and experiments, or flavour text on the various upgrades and attacks. I don't read any of it, but I am so glad it exists.

Either you keep grinding missions to collect new abilities and further level up your heroes, or you can start a New Game+ and redo the campaign. In New Game+, all of your costumes, colorways, and friendships carry over, but more importantly, so do your unlocked heroes. This means you can take Scarlet Witch, Wolverine, Captain America, and even The Hulk straight into battle right from the start - even if it doesn’t make sense in the story for those characters to be there.

Nothing, at least, until Midnight Suns, which would have challenged for a medal if it had launched last year. My excitement for the game continued to bubble while our reviewer, Eric Switzer, relayed praise for the game and teased tidbits. However, there was one letdown in all that he told me - you cannot romance the heroes. In playing though, I have found something better. I have found a friend.

There’s one where Luke Cage is persuaded to join because of a bulletproof hoodie, so he doesn’t have to keep buying new ones. It’s all a bit silly, but Marvel’s Midnight Suns has captured that charming little internet nugget and made it a unique way of getting to know its heroes.

Initially I dismissed the game, partially because of the trauma inflicted by Marvel’s Avengers, but mostly because of the card mechanics. It's a card game from the X-COM guys, but with Iron Man instead of aliens? Just feels like a heap of ideas all folding into each other until they become a pile of sludge. Fortunately, the cards aren't used as they would be in the genre usually, but instead as a pool of turn-based moves like a more varied Pokemon or Final Fantasy, the battling is less like the hyper-technical and percentage based X-COM and more like a faster, more fluid Fire Emblem, and Iron Man is not a parody of Robert Downey Jr., but instead an interesting and layered hero. Midnight Suns is a contender for best game of the year, even with two heavyweights opening and closing 2022 in Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok. What has surprised me the most, though, is how cinematic it all is.

That tackles thematic villainy instead of a dude in an over-designed robot suit? Be careful what you wish for. The MCU can risk being dull, but it’s mostly solid most of the time. The New Mutants was eaten alive by contrasting executive ideas, the Disney Fox buyout, and repeated script rewrites. In it, we lost one of the most interesting mutants, and with Marvel likely to play safe as it reboots the mutants, it felt like her chance had gone. Enter Midnight Suns.

Spending time together, talking them through their insecurities, and going on friend dates is a big part of Midnight Suns, and as your bonds between the heroes grow, a love story eventually emerges.

During the PS3 era, the pinnacle of player choice was being able to decide if you wanted your character to be good or evil. While some games implemented it better than others, the vast majority of these karma systems boiled down to choosing one option or the other and sticking with it through the whole game. InFamous, Fable, Mass Effect, BioShock, KOTOR, and Metro all have slightly different approaches to choice-based morality, but the way you engage with them is all the same: first you pick all the ‘good’ options, then you replay the game and pick all the ‘evil’ options. You might get different powers along the way, hear different dialogue, and if you’re lucky, see a different ending, but any game that promised to shape the story around your choices was, almost invariably, lying. These traditional binary morality systems fell largely out of fashion in recent years, and for good reason.

At some point around the time the first Avengers movie came out, the film franchise became such a dominant component of pop culture that every other type of Marvel media was pulled into its orbit. For many, the MCU is Marvel, and any deviations from what’s been established in the movies seems wrong, even if its history predates the MCU by decades. That’s why the comic book version of Nick Fury was replaced by his long lost son who bears a striking resemblance to Samuel L. Jackson, and why Loki became an anti-hero. It also probably explains why the cast of Marvel’s Avengers look like low-rent celebrity impersonators, and why Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy features the exact same team as the film, despite that roster not having much history in the comics prior to that.

Royal tacks on even more time, and it frequently takes players 200 hours to roll credits. If you’re not a Persona fan, you might be thinking, “Wow, a massively popular game that takes 100 hours or more to beat? That must have some pretty compelling gameplay to keep players’ attention for that long!” To an extent, that’s true. Persona has big exciting boss fights, deeply strategic turn-based combat, and a complex story with surprising plot twists and lovable characters. But you don’t get to 100 hours without some filler, and from an outsider’s perspective, Persona is almost entirely filler.

While the developers estimate a single playthrough can take 40-60 hours, I can tell you from experience that finding all the collectibles, going to all the club meetings, and maximizing your friendship with a few heroes can take closer to 80 hours. There’s a great incentive to replay Midnight Suns in New Game+ if you want to continue building your friendships, pushing to higher difficulty tiers, collecting new abilities, and maybe even try following the opposite path of Light and Darkness, but at a certain point you will inevitably exhaust the content available - at least until the DLC characters are released early next year.
