As in its predecessor, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has you traveling to the four corners of Hyrule to help the four non-Hyrulean tribes deal with some pretty horrific disasters. For the Gerudo of the aptly-named Gerudo Desert, this takes the form of a shroud of sand, which provides cover for spooky monsters to invade their settlements.

Not only is traversing Gerudo Desert a challenge thanks to the extreme temperatures, but there are new foes to face, a temple to puzzle your way through, and a devious boss to strike down at the end of it all. It's a worthy challenge for such a legendary hero.

How To Get To Gerudo Town

Tears of the Kingdom - Three Gibdos

Gerudo Town is located to the southwest of Hyrule, in the middle of the Gerudo Desert. This is a harsh environment, plagued by intense heat during the day and bitter cold at nighttime and high in the air. To combat this, you'll need some levels of heat and cold resistance.

The table below lists some easily-acquired sources of weather resistance.

Cold Resistance Sources

Heat Resistance Sources

Meals made with Spicy Peppers.

Meals made with Chillshrooms or Cool Saffinas.

Elixirs made with Warm Darners.

Elixirs made with Fireproof Lizards.

Archaic Warm Greaves, obtained from the Great Sky Islands, or Snowquill Armor, obtained from Rito Village.

Desert Voe Headband, obtained from Kara Kara Bazaar.

Until you delve into Gerudo Desert, you'll need to rely on one of the cooked sources of heat resistance - or simply rush your way to Kara Kara Bazaar while healing the damage you take from the sun.

Tears of the Kingdom - Saula in Kara Kara Bazaar

In Kara Kara Bazaar, which is located adjacent to the oasis that you can see from the nearby Gerudo Canyon Skyview Tower, you can meet a Gerudo named Saula. She can sell you the Desert Voe Headband for 450 rupees, which is crucial for this area. Buying it will also get you a hint as to the location of the rest of the Desert Voe armor set, but we'll get to that later.

The Desert Voe Headband paired with a single piece of cold resistance equipment will provide plenty of resistance for most of the Gerudo Desert. It's only on deeper into the desert and on Death Mountain will you need more levels of heat resistance.

Venturing further into Gerudo Desert will mess up your map function. This, paired with your obscured vision thanks to the sand shroud, makes it very hard to navigate. To counter this, climb the lighthouse in Kara Kara Bazaar.

From the top of this structure, you should be able to see Gerudo Town clearly - glide towards it and when you reach the ground, simply keep heading in the same direction. Ignore distractions, but be wary of the rift that's formed between the bazaar and the town.

There are also sand tornadoes in the desert that you can use to glide upwards. When you breach the sand shroud, your vision will be clear for a few moments and you can get your bearings.

How To Get Into The Gerudo Shelter

Tears of the Kingdom - The secret entrance to the Gerudo Town shelter

When you reach Gerudo Town, you'll notice that it's mostly abandoned, with very few individuals walking around.

You'll also notice that it's infested with Gibdos, undead enemies with a special type of armor.

To deal with Gibdos, you'll first need to deal elemental damage to them. This will strip them of their armor, turning them white - while they're white, you can hit them with your normal weapons. Gibdos are particularly weak to electricity, so try using weapons Fused with Electric Keese Wings or Electric Lizalfos Tails. Arrows Fused with Shock Fruits will also work very well.

Before attempting to get into the shelter, it's a good idea to climb up to the very top of the town and claim the shrine there. If you need help with completing the puzzle inside Soryotanog Shrine, click here.

The majority of the town's residents are hiding from the disaster above in a shelter beneath the palace at the end of town. Riju's diary holds a clue as to how to get inside.

Head up into the palace and get behind the throne. Use Ultrahand to move the walrus head from the pedestal there to reveal a hole that leads right down to the shelter. Drop down and a cutscene will start, explaining the situation in Gerudo Desert. This is where you'll get the quest to find Riju.

How To Find The Secret Armor Shop In Gerudo Town

Tears of the Kingdom - Rocks in the sewers beneath Gerudo Town

Before you set off to find Riju, you may want to go find the secret armor shop that Saula mentioned to you back in Kara Kara Bazaar. Head to the entrance of the town and look to your left - you'll find a well that you can climb down. Swim forward a little until you find a passage blocked by reddish rocks.

Destroy these rocks with a weapon Fused with a rock and continue on down the new path, climbing the short wall as you go. Eventually, you'll reach a patch of dry land with two small puddles either side of it. Use Ascend on this patch to reach the armor shop.

Tears of the Kingdom - Ascending into the Voe Armor shop in gerudo town

The armor shop contains the rest of the Desert Voe armor set, and also two sets of greaves for running in sand and snow.

How To Find Riju

Tears of the Kingdom - Meeting Ruji outside Gerudo Town

Riju is located in the North Gerudo Ruins, which is, as you might have expected, just a little bit north of Gerudo Town. Climb up on the northern wall and glide to the north. You won't have to walk through the obscuring sand shroud for long until you reach the ruins.

You'll soon spot Riju thanks to the lightning she's summoning and the chat bubbles that pop up as she summons them. Head towards her, and a cutscene will start.

Tears of the Kingdom - Training Dummy in Gerudo Desert

What follows is a short tutorial on how to use Riju's lightning ability. Simply shoot an arrow at the training dummy and Riju will call lightning down on top of it. Once you've completed this successfully, you'll be taught to shoot arrows between groups of targets, displaying the fact that the lightning strikes have a large radius.

Riju's lightning can only strike arrows that land within her expanding radius of electrical energy. Wait until the radius covers your target before shooting.

If you are out of Arrows, there is a large stack of them nearby.

A cutscene will play out after the tutorial, alerting you to a monster attack on Kara Kara Bazaar. You can try to head there through the sand shroud, or just fast travel to the shrine.

Defending Kara Kara Bazaar

Tears of the Kingdom - Ruji, Link, and Buliara

Once you reach the bazaar, a fight against an endless horde of Gibdos will begin. They will only appear on one side of the oasis, and you are encouraged to use Riju's lightning.

Tears of the Kingdom - Firing arros at Gibdos

Aim your arrows between the groups of Gibdos - they'll mostly stay together, letting you mow down three at once if your aim is good. Don't worry about misses, Riju's lightning charges quite quickly.

If you're low on arrows, there is a Gerudo warrior on the battlefield who can give you some. You'll spot her by the chat bubble telling you she has arrows for you.

Tears of the Kingdom - Gibdo Hive introduction

After defeating a few waves of enemies, you'll be alerted to the Gibdo Hive - the large mushroom-like tower with a pulsating purple heart. From here on out, focus your attacks on the purple part of the hive. After a few lightning strikes, it will be destroyed, and the fight will end.

The ensuing cutscene will point you in the direction of Gerudo Town, where you'll have to prepare for a large-scale assault from Gibdos. Head back to Gerudo Town now.

Preparing For The Fight At Gerudo Town

Tears of the Kingdom - Teake the Gerudo Captain

To begin this stage of the quest, talk to Riju and Buliara. You'll be given two tasks - to assign some Gerudo warriors, and to pick up supplies.

Head to the right of the throne room and talk to the Gerudo captain, Teake, with her soldiers. You'll be prompted to assign three teams (two melee and one cannon) to one of three stations (north, east, and west).

Tears of the Kingdom - Deploying Soldiers to defend Gerudo Town

We recommend sending the cannon and one of the melee teams to the north gate, and the second team to the west gate. Link is strong enough to deal with one of the gates on his own, and the north entrance provides the enemy the quickest route to Riju, who you'll be depending on in the upcoming fight.

Once you've assigned the teams, head over to the area to the left of the throne room. Here, you'll find a bunch of equipment and materials that you'll find useful in the fight. Be sure to pick up the electricity items and Fuse some electrical weapons, and do a little cooking. Don't forget to open the chests here!

This is a good opportunity to take photos of all the Gerudo equipment for your compendium!

When you're ready to begin the fight, talk to Riju again.

Defending Gerudo Town

Tears of the Kingdom - Gibdos attacking Gerudo Town

The attack on Gerudo Town is an extended sequence in which you are tasked with eliminating the three Gibdo Hives that have appeared while defending Riju from being defeated. You'll see her health bar on the left side of the screen - if it starts falling, immediately return to the center of town to defend her.

If you followed our advice and left one of the gates undefended, this should be your first port of call. Focus your lightning arrow attacks on the Gibdo Hive and use conventional weapons to defeat the Gibdos that swarm you. After a few strikes, the Hive will fall.

Tears of the Kingdom - Using lightning arrows to defend Gerudo Town

With one Hive down, return to Riju, defeat any Gibdos that made it past your defenses, and head to the entrance guarded by only one team of warriors. They should be competent enough at dealing with the Gibdos, so focus your energy on destroying the hive.

With two hives down, return to the courtyard and defend Riju, who is likely under attack by now. At this point in the battles, Moth Gibdos will have started to spawn - they can fly, so you'll need to take them out with arrows before they attack.

Tears of the Kingdom - Shooting a Gibdo Hive]

After thinning out the herd, go take care of the final Gibdo Hive. The battle will end soon after that.

How To Find The Lightning Temple

Tears of the Kingdom - A sandstorm in Gerudo Desert

After the battle, you'll be able to find some spoils in the courtyard - mostly monster parts and the like. To continue with the quest, though, you'll need to go find Riju, who is standing at the very back of the shelter underneath Gerudo Town.

Talk to Riju and you'll learn of a riddle that points you in the direction of the next part of the quest. This involves finding three towers and solving quick puzzles on them to unlock the Lightning Temple.

Tears of the Kingdom - The first light tower in the desert

The first step of this quest is to get back up to the throne room and look out at the desert behind the throne. In the distance, you should see a tower - head there now. On top of the tower will be a device that shines a light in one direction. This will lead to a second tower - head there now.

When you reach the second tower, you'll notice that while it also has a mirror device, the mirror doesn't line up with the beam of light.

Tears of the Kingdom - Raising the second light tower in the desert

Near the tower is a rocky outcropping with a capstan (the circular devices with spokes that you can push to use) on it. Get on top of the rock and push the spokes to bring the mirror in line with the beam of light. This will send the beam to a third, final tower.

Tears of the Kingdom - A makeshift capstan for the third light tower

Head to the third tower, and you'll notice that while the mirror is in line with the beam, the angle of the light doesn't send the beam back at the first tower, which is what we need. To solve this, get on top of the tower.

There's a capstan here that has no spokes, so drop a weapon and use Ultrahand to attach it, forming a makeshift spoke. There are wooden rods underneath the platform, but it's easier to do it this way.

Turn the capstan with Ultrahand and eventually, the beam of light will match up with the first tower and a cutscene will play, revealing a pedestal in the middle of the triangle of light.

Tears of the Kingdom - Shooting a lightning arrow at the zonai device

Head to the pedestal, witness a cutscene, and then shoot an arrow at the top of the device when prompted.

Head to the newly-arisen temple. When prompted, shoot an arrow at the big Gidbo Hive. This will begin a short boss battle, so be sure you're healed up!

How To Defeat The Queen Gibdo

Tears of the Kingdom - Queen Gibdo introduction

Like her smaller kin, the Queen Gibdo will start the battle with protective armor. Striking her with an elemental attack will make her shed the armor, allowing you to hit her with other weapons.

For this battle, use Riju's lightning ability by interacting with her and waiting for the electrical radius to reach the boss, then shoot her with an arrow. Then, rush in and beat her down with your best melee weapon.

Queen Gibdo's most prevalent attack is to summon three tornadoes. To avoid this, dash to the side - don't try to block or run through them. If you're on top of a dune, glide down to make things quicker.

Tears of the Kingdom - Queen Gibdo on fire-1

This battle is only a preview of Queen Gibdo's full might - after dealing a good chunk of damage, she'll fly off into the temple. As you'd expect, you have to follow her.

The Lightning Temple

Tears of the Kingdom - The purple entrance to the Lightning Temple

To get into the temple, use Riju's power to shoot down the purple mass on the bottom of the temple near the fight you just had. This will reveal the entrance.
