PlayStation fans had been waiting over 18 monhts for the platform to blow them away, and what they got was a mild breeze. While there were huge announcements like the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake, Alan Wake 2, first gameplay footage for Assassin's Creed Mirage and Dragon's Dogma 2, and an impressive set piece from Marvel's Spider-Man 2, there was very little there to get you excited to be a PS5 owner.

As many pointed out after the showcase was finished, a lot of the biggest reveals during the showcase are also coming to Xbox, and there seems to be a general feeling of disappointment amongst the PlayStation community over first-party exclusives. This was made very evident via a Reddit post on the official PlayStation subreddit, in which lots of fans discussed the announcements made during the showcase.

"Glorified indie state of play. Why do i get hyped for this shit anymore," says u/kenni417. It's a sentiment that is shared by quite a few people, as the PlayStation Showcase brand is rather synonymous with big first-party reveals. State of Plays are usually reserved for third-party reveals and smaller announcements, and yesterday's show did give off that kind of vibe.

Even the first-party stuff didn't impress PlayStation fans that much, driven home by u/SpideyStretch1998 who was "in utter disbelief" that PlayStation decided to air an advert for the upcoming Gran Turismo movie. It also didn't help too much that the majority of PlayStation's first-party announcements were incredibly brief CG trailers with very few details. It's difficult to get excited for a game if you know very little about it.

And of course, like with every disappointing showcase, fans reel off a laundry list of titles that they were disappointed didn't show up. Bloodborne fans in particular were hoping to have their prayers finally answered after recent comments from God of War creator David Jaffe, while u/GluedToTheMirror is wondering where previously announced titles like Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, The Last of Us Factions 2, or Stellar Blade actually are.

While you could pass a lot of this off as gamers being disappointed their favorite titles didn't show up, it's the first time in a while that PlayStation has dropped what most people consider an absolute stinker of a showcase. It could be a result of development time getting longer and longer for first-party games as polished as PlayStation's, and may also be the start of a lull in big releases on the platform. Third-party studios seem to be doing a lot of the heavy lifting recently, and it seems like it might be the case for 2024 as well.
